Are you BEAUTIFUL?.

Society has set a standard when it comes to beauty or physical attributes of a person. This society’s standard of being “beautiful” greatly affects the confidence and self-esteem of an individual. In many media settings such as social and televisions, the majority of people being shown are those with pleasing looks and personalities. This idea or setting gives rise to changing looks with the help of plastic surgery just to satisfy the need and meet the standard. Because of this standard, the society is torn between saying “you are perfect just the way you are”, and “I have to change, I have to fit in.” There is always going to be that side that cares and the one that doesn’t. This standard brings off stigma to society in general. The negative attitudes (prejudice) and discrimination, arises. The question is, thus good looks or pleasing physical attributes of a person, essential to become happy and successful in life?.

For the purpose of discussion about beauty, I want to put into context Pia Wurtzbach’s answer to her final question in Miss Universe Beauty Contest.”To be a Miss Universe is an honor and a responsibility. If I were to be Miss Universe, I will use my voice to influence the youth and I would raise awareness to certain causes like HIV, an awareness that is timely and relevant to my country, which is the Philippines. I want to show the world – the universe rather – that I am confidently beautiful with a heart.”

If you are going to analyze her answer “beautiful with a heart” clearly states what beauty is all about. Her statement highlights the importance of a person’s heart or inner being to be beautiful. Unfortunately, the show focuses on sexy body, the beautiful faces, the long sexy legs, a well-proportioned bosom, well-rounded buttocks which contradict her statement about beauty. This clearly brings confusion to society especially the young adults who are just discovering and starting to build their confidence which will help or break them to succeed and be happy.

Let me tell you a story of a woman who was once physically beautiful. She was so pleasant to look at and can be scored as a PERFECT 10. In the early stages of her life, she grew confident because of the admiration and adoration of most people around her. Interestingly as she grows older, her beauty fails and saddened her instead of happiness and success. Why?. The reason is, she set a very high standard over herself because of the very high expectations of the people around her. She thinks that her beauty should match a more extravagant social status. She thinks that she cannot be ordinary, she should be special as what the society thinks of who she is. She thinks that she has to live up with the expectations and approval of others based on her physical attributes and not what is inside her heart. As time passed by, she grew sad and discontented in life because of the pressure and stresses that the situation brought her.

Let me tell you another story of a woman who lacks physical beauty and even has a disability. She is crippled caused by an illness in her childhood. She grew challenged by this disability and even bullied as a kid. But her situation doesn’t stop her to reach her dreams and aspirations as she focused on the positive aspects of her life. The bullying caused her to stumble but it gave her inner strength to push herself and to dream more. Together with the determination and support of the people around her including her family, she discovers that there is something more important to physical beauty and physical abilities i.e., a heart full of happiness and contentment. She chooses acceptance and contentment on her situation over sadness and despair.

There is also a story of a man who was born blind. He has no clear perception of what beauty that the eyes can see is about because literally, he cannot. His own interpretation of beautiful is based only on the senses of feeling and hearing. He considers a person beautiful if he/she speaks with gentleness and kindness. a person who holds tight affirming an action saying “I will not let you go”. He considers those people who help him see and experience the beauty of the world in spite of his blindness as beautiful individuals.

Do you consider yourself as beautiful and happy in life, a person who is confidently beautiful with a heart?. Whatever your response is, always remember beauty is not what you see in front of the mirror, it is what your soul can see deep in your heart. BEAUTIFULLY stand in front of the world to spread positivity in the JOURNEY called LIFE. It is a journey to live, love, and learn.
